Vegan materials: the reality of leather alternatives

Unraveling the myths of vegan materials and exploring the unique properties of authentic leather.

With consumers becoming increasingly aware, choosing materials that promote both environmental responsibility and durability is essential. Thus, the growing popularity of vegan materials has raised many questions about their authenticity, environmental impact and comparative properties to genuine leather. This post seeks to understand what lies behind the alternatives to leather, focusing on innovations and the commitment to using leather in sustainable practices.

What are vegan materials?

Alternatives to leather that promise a greener origin, made from plant or fruit fibers, have been gaining ground in the market with the promise of less environmental impact. However, when we understand the details of these innovations, we notice a gap between their characteristics and those of real leather.

While new pineapple or cactus-based strands are coming onto the scene promising a greener future, the question remains: can these innovations capture the essence and unique properties that define authentic leather?

Leather’s durability, texture and ability to age elegantly often elude plant-based alternatives. Although these new options are celebrated for their ecological credentials, they face limitations when compared to leather, especially in terms of resistance and longevity.

Plant-based, is it?

Despite the green premise, this material is a paradox. The concept suggests an alternative to leather, derived from plant sources, but whose reality lies in the realms of synthetics. Many of these versions are woven from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU), materials which, despite their ecological pretensions, are firmly anchored in petroleum.

It should be understood that in Brazil, the term “leather” is strictly regulated by Law No.4.888, in force since 1965.

Thus, this law expressly prohibits the use of the term “leather” to describe materials that are not obtained exclusively from animal skin. Therefore, despite being a positive step towards sustainability, these plant-based alternatives cannot replicate all the characteristics intrinsic to leather and are still in search of a formula that fully combines environmental awareness with the valued properties of leather.

Leather vs. Synthetic

  •         When you put leather and synthetic on a scale, the differences aren’t just visible; they’re almost tangible. Let’s unpack these differences without any fuss.
  • ·         Durability: leather stands out for its durability. After all, it is able to withstand various types of environmental conditions over the years without losing its integrity or aesthetics. In contrast, alternative materials often fail to offer the same longevity. Thus, they become less reliable under continuous use and wear.
  • ·         Flexibility: leather’s natural flexibility allows it to adapt and mold as it is used. It therefore retains its shape and strength at the same time. This contrasts with many “vegan” alternatives. After all, these may not offer the same adaptability, limiting their functionality and long-term comfort.
  • Environmental impact: Genuine leather has the potential for environmentally responsible decomposition. As such, it contributes less to landfill pollution than synthetic substitutes. Many alternatives, despite being promoted as environmentally friendly, can present challenges for sustainability due to their short lifespan and decomposition difficulties.

This comparison is not meant to discourage the search for sustainable alternatives. But it is to reveal details about what you really take home: a material that ages with you or one that can barely keep up.

Conscious choice: leather vs. Alternatives

Given the evidence, the choice between genuine leather and its alternatives should not be based solely on aesthetics or price. It is essential to consider environmental impacts and durability.

Innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. That’s why we design our tanning and leather production methods to minimize environmental impact, while ensuring that our products maintain the highest quality. We reflect our commitment to environmental responsibility in every leather item we offer to the market.
